They actually use a petrochemical that was invented in 1996 by 2 biologists from the University of North Carolina which UNC patented and licensed to DOW Chemical Company which pays the university, "the highest royalty revenues in the school’s history."

Dow actually sold the subsidiary that makes this chemical back in 2015 to Boulevard Acquisition corp. for over $900M. Then it was sold again to Paine Schwartz in 2023, a private equity co. Why would a chemical company, DOW, sell one of the top chemicals? The reason it's gone from company to company is because they are playing musical chairs before the music stops and the toxic chemical is banned.

This synthetic chemical is called, 1-Methylcyclopropene, (1-MCP) binds to ethylene receptor sites and slows ethylene activity, thus slowing ripening. It's chemically altering the natural ripening process and it's a highly toxic chemical that they have to wear hazmat suits to apply, but don't worry it's safe. "An avocado's skin is permeable and porous to a certain extent" The reality is if you wouldn't want it on your body, you probably don't want it on your food. This is the foundation of the clean food movement.

They douse this toxic chemical on organic fruit and consider it safe. Everything I have seen shows it does leave residue. I find it interesting that there is an exemption for this chemical since it was owned by Dow Chemical, these massive companies can get away with absolutely anything: "The EPA established an exemption from the requirement of a tolerance for residues of 1-MCP in or on fruits and vegetables when used as a post harvest plant growth regulator, i.e., for the purpose of inhibiting the ripening promotion effects of ethylene. This tolerance exemption became effective July 26, 2002 (67 FR 48796)."

Given that there are no long term safety studies or any real established research into the effects of this toxic chemical on humans, I would avoid consuming fruit that has been treated with this chemical. There is no reliable info that points to this chemical being safe to consume."Section 408(c)(2)(A)(i) of FFDCA allows EPA to establish an exemption from the requirement for a tolerance (the legal limit for a pesticide chemical residue in or on a food) only if EPA determines that the exemption is “safe.” Section 408(c)(2)(A)(ii) of FFDCA defines “safe” to mean that “there is a reasonable certainty that no harm will result from aggregate exposure to the pesticide chemical residue, including all anticipated dietary exposures and all other exposures for which there is reliable information.”"

For instance, the EPA allows highly toxic glyphosate to be sprayed all over the nation and then wants you to think it has the best interest of the environment & your health. Monsanto has paid hundreds of millions, likely billions, in lawsuits proving the active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, causes cancer, but the product is still widely available everywhere instead of being pulled from the market. The EPA is a corrupt organization, literally funded by the very companies it is supposed to protect us from, here is just one example: (surprise, it's DOW chemical co.)

In 1945, the FDA approved DDT to be sprayed directly on humans, especially children, before it was banned by the EPA in 1972. It took 27 years for the government to realize this chemical was highly toxic to humans. And there are many other chemicals with the same story. Another toxic chemical that the government requires be added to our water since 1945, is fluoride, and now the government admits that it lowers children's IQ and now it's mainstream news after people have been warning about this for decades:

The reason I bring all this up is because I think it's important for consumers to understand what's being done to their food, especially when they are deceived and not even informed that there was a toxic chemical sprayed on their organic avocados AFTER they were harvested, chemically altering the natural ripening process.
